Former Chief Minister of Bihar, pioneer of social justice and people’s leader Karpoori Thakur will be posthumously honored with the country’s highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna”. This announcement was made by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, a day before his 100th birth anniversary.

Karpoori Thakur, popularly known as “Jananayak”, was a freedom fighter and teacher. He was the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Bihar and held the post twice.

Karpoori Thakur was born on January 24, 1924 in Pitoujhiya village of Samastipur district of Bihar. His father Gokul Thakur was a marginal farmer.
