Explain – Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have entered into a tripartite agreement with the mediation of the Center to resolve the dispute over sharing of water of Chambal and its tributaries.
Under this, a new national river project will be prepared by connecting Rajasthan’s East Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) and Madhya Pradesh’s modified Parvati-Kalisindh and Chambal (PKC) link project.
A total of 22 dams and barrages will be built on Chambal’s tributaries Parvati, Kalisindh, Kshipra, Kuno, Lakhundar, Mej, Kiul, Banas rivers. Of these, 17 dams and barrages will take shape in Madhya Pradesh and 5 in Rajasthan.
This entire project will cost approximately Rs 75 thousand crores, 90 percent of which will be given by the Central Government. Both the states will have to bear only 10 percent of their respective project costs.
According to Madhya Pradesh Water Resources Minister Tulsi Silavat, 4 lakh 12 thousand hectares of agricultural land can be irrigated in Madhya Pradesh. The blueprint of this project was prepared in 2004, but a consensus could be reached between the two states after 20 years.
Under this, 5 new dams will be built on Chambal river upstream of Gandhi Sagar Dam, one dam each will be built on Kshipra and Gambhir rivers.
